A sacred place in the silent surrounding but with a great history. The first church in Rubene dates back to the beginning of the 13th century when Latviešu Indriķis (Henricus de Lettis/the Henrey of Latvia, the author of the Livonian Chronicle) spread the faith there (there are some doubts among the historians about the place where the gathering place of Christian community was) so the church is the birthplace of Christianity or Christian congregation traditions in Latvia. The church that can be seen now with a golden rooster on the top of the church was built between 1739 - 1740. It is said that the church was reconstructed in the 19th century. Another famous person to be mentioned is Christoph Harder, who served in the Rubene congregation the longest from 1772 - 1816. He was a book writer, tranlator and publisher. The first cookery book in Latvian was published by Christoph Harder in 1795. In 1805 a new school project was worked out so Latvian schools needed a book of Maths (aritmētika). At the beginning of 19th century teaching reading and religion were the only subjects taught at schools of Latvia. In 1806 Christoph Harder published the first book of Maths ( Rēķināšanas grāmatiņa ne priekš visiem tumšiem ļaudīm
